Problem Discovery
01
Most budgeting products out there are plain and boring, consisting of the same old functions like pie charts.
While practical (some more than others), they do nothing to make the experience more exciting and interesting to address the anxiety users experience while dealing with debt and budgeting for whatever reason.
02
Across the UK, 1 in 4 (23%) of all people exhibit significant levels of anxiety when dealing with money.
Money and mental health are often linked. Poor mental health can make managing money harder and worrying about money can make your mental health worse.
03
UK households have seen their outgoings surpass their income for the first time in nearly 30 years.
To fund this shortfall, households either have to budget, borrow or dip into their savings. However a quarter of British people (13 million) do not have enough savings to support them for 1 month if they experience only 25% cut in income. And 1 in 10 Brits admitted they typically spend more than they earn.

Why it’s important
Money and mental health are often linked. Poor mental health can make managing money harder and worrying about money can make your mental health worse.
Statistically people with mental health challenges are 3 times more likely to be in financial difficulty than those without.
Problem Statement
How might I design an application that can help young adults manage their finances and budget for their goals in a fun, more engaging and stress free way?
Solution
A product that ingests some fun into budgeting in a visual and interactive way, making trying to stick to a budget less of a stressful and more of a positive experience.
Why a budgeting product? Because from paying off debt to low income, everywhere you go for solid financial advice, budgeting is the answer you will find.
Also because stable finances will boost positive mental health more than any bath bomb or scented candle will ever do.
What is Fortune Teller?
This budgeting apps narrative is built around the concept of fortune telling. It tells you about your financial past and present while letting you challenge the future.
Change your fortune with the help of action based tarot cards that provide guidance and support, set spending limits, or even outright blocks on your transactions.
Who/What is Zoltar?
Zoltar is an ethereal being based on the all seeing eye. It plays the role of the fortune teller and in this apps case, an interactive host. It will ask you questions, give you answers and help you navigate through the app.
See your past.
Manage your present. Change your future.
The app uses the concept of time in order to categorise and separate content within the product. The navigation functions in a linear fashion just like time does, with each section providing access to a specific budgeting function.

Past
Challenge & Cards (Gamification)
This is where the real fun lies. In this section user can ask Zoltar to help challenge their financial future and manage set challenges.
Zoltar will ask a few simple questions, and based of user input and answers it will deal a limited number of cards with various action levels. User then can pick one and apply it to the account.
Present
Accounts & Balance
This section is for the current state
of users finances. However the budgeting twist on the present balance is that it allows you organise your money into pots where you
can see available balance for your spendings, bills and savings.
Future
Transactions & Sumary
The past is for things that are in the past, which in realm of finances would be past transactions.
This section however lets user navigate to any day, week or month and zoltar will tell them how much they’ve spent as well as transactions for that specific period of time only.
Set challenges with action tarot cards
Challenge your financial habits with these tarot cards. In app they serve as actions that user can apply to their spendings account.
From support messages and spending reminders to outright transactions blocks, these cards are meant to help users address areas of their finances that they struggle with the most.
